Managing Back Pain
The study of Biomechanics as a separate branch of the fitness and therapy businesses was a great discovery for me; I wanted to know where all the people who had trained me were getting their knowledge, so I did some research to track down the best, and went and did it too. This further understanding of the human body and how and why it moves, and why sometimes it doesn't, has filtered into my everyday teaching and has helped me to deliver to you a higher quality of Pilates. It has also given me an insight into muscle releases and remedial movement to help those of you who need a bit more help to get moving again, and managing pain in the back.
I learnt that there is rarely an out and out cure for back pain (particularly in the lower back), but there is always management, with Pilates often at the forefront of managing such issues. I try to encourage all of my clients to learn how to adapt and listen to their bodies rather than comparing themselves to others, and guide them to explore their own range of movement and learn when to push against the boundaries to increase fitness strength and stretch, and when to steer away from them.
This year I have been studying lower back problems in greater depth and have recently gained my Level 4 Diploma in Lower Back Care; this has crystallised all my previous Pilates and biomechanics knowledge, and the accreditation enables me to work with doctors and physiotherapists in this specific area.
